D5 laggy, help please

**D5 Render Version:**last
**Graphics Card:**rtx 4070
**Driver Version:**last
Issue Description:

Hello,
Recently (1 month ago) I’ve been experiencing lags when working on my projects.
The first time I concluded that it was due to my file being too “heavy” with 8 different Sketchup links (80 MB each Sketchup file).
Today I’m starting a new project with 4 “simple” Sketchup files (total 64mo).
I’m experiencing the same lags and major slowness when choosing materials, browsing, managing settings, etc.
I have no hardware problems with an rtx 4070, 64 GB of ram and a good processor.
I tested synchronising a single Sketchup file containing all the components (the 64 MB divided into 4 files).
My lags didn’t disappear, even if they were slightly reduced, but I did notice a big difference in the size of the D5 file/folder, with 750 MB for the single synchronisation and 2.8 GB for the multi-file synchronisation. Is this normal?
Finally, I gave the sketchup and d5 files to a colleague with a computer with equivalent equipment (and nvidia studio drivers installed like me) and he had no problems.
His navigation and work flowed smoothly without any lags, as I’m used to on my laptop.
Note that for these tests I applied exactly the same settings as he did in D5.
MY QUESTION, what do you advise me to do? Reinstall D5, Nvidia drivers and switch to Geforce instead of studio … then I don’t know what else to do… …
NB: I use Bitdefender totally security check and did not see any problem.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello, @Thiass

I hope you’re doing well, I’m sorry to hear about the issue you are facing. Could you please provide me with screenshots of the system information and GPU usage while running your project files in D5.

In order to resolve this issue, you will need to optimize all the elements in your files. Here are some steps to follow:

  1. Reduce the polygon count of your 3D model and delete any unseen surfaces or unnecessary models.
  2. Be cautious when using foliage, lighting, and non-essential characters when syncing to D5.
  3. If the file is large, consider separating the interior and exterior scenes for better manageability.
  4. Consider using a laptop or PC with higher specifications.

Additionally, when working with a large file or any file, the complete D5 folder will become larger, which is normal. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to access or run your file if it is only a .Drs file. Please refer to the attached photo for the standard complete file of a D5 folder.

Thank you for your support and understanding to D5 Render

Hello, @maslu

Thanks for your feedback.
Here are the screenshots requested (with my 4 sketchup files open in parallel,

Regarding your optimization listing,

  1. cf. Project info where you will see that it is a simple one (I just start with it and Sketchup files are “light”
  2. No elements on this project (I did not start with D5 works)
  3. File not to large at all
  4. My specifications are confortable for working (I pastly work on much heavier and more complex projects and did not encounter any bugs or lags).

Regarding your answer on the file size. My remark and question was more with this huge difference between the same project but synchronised differently.
Why do we have 700mo for a synchronisation with 1 single Sketchup file containing the 4 components and 2.7 go for the one synchronised with these same 4 components placed on separate Sketchup files?

I’m actually making some test and will revert with results.

Thanks

So I made this test.
As introduction, please note that I did not encounter this problem previously and that my colleague who did the test with no lags Yesterday had 6 Sketchup files open at the at the same time.

TEST 1
0. I check all my drivers and only update one from my laptop (Aero, Gigabyte Notebook Library)

  1. I open my D5 file // worked perfectly
  2. I open a first Sketchup file (with no D5 connect) // D5 works well
  3. I open a second Sketchup file // D5 start lags but always workable
  4. I open one after one the 2 others SKP files // D5 lag, impracticable to work
  5. I keep only D5 and 1 SKP file open (2) // D5 works well

TEST 2
I change my Nvidia drivers going from the studio one’s to the Geforce one
I reproduce Test 1 with exactly the same results.

Even if a laptop is less powerful than a fixed unit, I repeat that I never had this problem in the past, which started about 1 month ago.
My hardware configuration is still pretty decent, I think, with an RTX 4070 GPU, 64GB of Ram and an i7-13700H CPU.
FYI my Sketchup 24.0.553 64 bits version and Nvidia Studio 560.81 driver.
I hope to find a solution soon, in the meantime to be able to work I will only open one Sketchup window at a time.
Thanks for your help

PS: my Nvidia graphics settings are set to default

Hi @Thiass,

I’m sorry to hear about the issue you’re experiencing. I’d like to help you out. Could you please take a screenshot of your VRAM usage every time you open one Sketchup file and one D5 file, and then do the same with multiple files open? It’s important for us to understand how much VRAM is being used, as if it reaches 80%, it can cause your program to lag and experience irregularities.

Thank you.

Hi,
Thanks for your feedback, here the information requested:

I think that the problem is coming from Sketchup which turn my GPU RTX 4070 use to 100% with only simple 3D models (total of 64mo files).
Thank you again for your help.

Hello,
For the record, I haven’t solved the problem (I think it comes from Sketchup) but I have reduced the lags with several sketchup files open, by changing the anti-aliasing sketchup grahic value to 0x.
As I have a 4K screen, I don’t notice any visual difference and Sketchup works better and has less impact on the GPU.
It’s not the final solution, but it’s the first one that allows me to work with D5 and several Sketchup files, with my GPU usage dropping to 60/80% instead of 100% previously.

I’m still hoping to find the root of this problem. Perhaps there is a tool to monitor exactly what is happening and report back to allow the technicians to do their job?

Have a good weekend, thanks for your help

Hi,
Looking for a solution, I made some test/try with GPU use statistic to find the origin of the problem.

If D5 only is open, D5 state indicate a 17% GPU use VS 40% on windows task manager.
If only 4 Sketchup files are open GPU use of 0% when no navigation and 20 to max 40% if I navigate into one Sketchup model.

Now I keep my 4 Sketchup files open and start / open my rendering file with D5.
I do not touch anything, do not navigate, just looking at my GPU windows task manager.
GPU use directly indicate 80 to 100% …

I conclude for the moment that the problem is not coming from Sketchup (with anti-aliiasing set to 0x).

Help will be nice  Thanks

Hi @Thiass,

I apologize again for all the trouble, and I want to thank you for always reaching out about the outcome of your test. I will gather all this information and send it to our development team. I might need to reach out to you if we require additional information.

Thank you, and I’m sorry for all the trouble.

Hello,
Some news, I finally did a complete uninstall of Sketchup and reinstalled properly by testing the plugins one by one.
I was able to detect some anomalies (x3) reported to the various developers of these plugins.
I was able to get rid of a lot of lags in Sketchup.
On the other hand, even though they are less significant, I still have lags on D5 when more than 2 sketchup files are open (even empty).
I didn’t have this problem in the past, as my computer had the hardware capacity to handle heavy tasks. Now my GPU is quickly overloaded as I mentioned earlier.
I haven’t yet tried re-installing D5, do you recommend it?
Or perhaps go back to an older version of the Nvidia Studio drivers?
Thanks

Hi @Thiass ,

You finally figured out the root cause of the issue with your Sketchup file. However, the dev team has not responded to me about your case. For the new issue, we should start with a basic troubleshooting solution: uninstall and change the installation path for D5 Render and perform a clean installation of your GPU driver. Also, have you been using another monitor lately? If this issue persists and our only alternative solution so far is to avoid opening multiple files simultaneously, I suggest we do that.

Thank you.

Hello,
Thank you for your feedback.
Between two appointments I’ll try the recommended re-installations
As far as screens are concerned, I work with 2 4K screens, a 16-inch on my laptop and a 27-inch external one.
Thanks for your help

hello, i have the same problem.
D5 has huge lag and when i select any surface it doesn.t show the propertis to edit the material. i woek in small to emdium scenes, and even from the begining without mony object and stuff D5 is lagging. it.s recovering for a few minutes and drops again.
I have a strong render station (AMD 7950X / RTX 4090 / 128 GB RAM). it.s super anoing and. it seems to work well for the first 10-15 minutes after that goes down, if i restart the program sometimes recovers other times it.s still lagging.

Hi, I apologize for the incovenience this issue has caused. I may need to confirm some information:

  • Can I just confirm if this problem was prevalent in the latest 2.9 version compared to the 2.8 version?
  • Regarding your FPS could you check if it drops even though you have activated the FPS Booster for Complex Geometry?
  • Could you also send the following information so we can further assess this issue? Thank you
