Terrain costum height map

Hi,

I like the new terrain additions in 2.9 update. However i need to scale the imported terrain map I downloaded from a website of a specific location. Can the terrain height map be scaled in any way, it doesn’t seem to give me any options to do so. thank you

Hi there, A Heightmap is a type of image that represents terrain height using greyscale values. Typically, black (value 0) indicates the lowest point, while white (value 255) indicates the highest point. It is recommended to import height maps with a minimum bit depth of 16 bits and a resolution of at least 2K.

I’m not entirely familiar with other websites or software that scale height maps, but I found 3D Map Generator reliable. Or perhaps you can change the white value of your current height map to a larger value.

Hi,

I know what a height map is. However i am wondering if there are controls on how large the costum height map comes in as. It would be beneficial if the height map could come in as a brush instead, so it is not static and you could move it around and scale it.

At the moment, it seems to only come in wherever it wants through the Manage tab in terrain. It only gives you a height setting. Sometimes you cannot get a map that is to scale, and it would be good to be able to scale to your scene. Is this possible or not?

Sorry, I have answered my own question. You can actually add your own ‘brush type map’. You get a standard brush, then you can actually change the height map within that brushes options or ‘height map resources’ as it says on there. Thanks!

Hi, I apologize I thought what you meant on the custom height map was being able to change the height of the terrain solely in the alpha image that was being provided. Nevertheless, thank you for updating and clarifying this issue.

alright, if anyone is wondering, just use any Height map from Asset Library, then select it’s map, it opens browse and you can put yours there, then you can easily use scale, height, etc to customize it :)) kinda didn’t understand when tcoogroup said “You can actually add your own ‘brush type map’” but still, great lead. thanks really!
