Yes. it is expected. The scattered objects are different from the original ones in D5 since their sizes are relatively small.
This seems odd. In most rendering software, the automated grass material is specifically designed to render faster. I see little use for the grass material and plan to just use Scatter.
Is the grass area too big? Can you send the scene to us for testing if convenient?

I will recreate it… the area was the size of a small school yard. The main thing is that when I fill the same size area with a scatter grass model the rendering time for a still image is around 25% compared to with grass material. I was getting render times of ~30 min with grass material. I figured out it was the grass causing the slowdown and when I switched to scattered grass model my render time went to 8 min. The only feature I miss out on is the ability to blend easily with the map below.
FYI, a related nice feature for D5 would be a separate opacity control that is not dependent on a texture map and works on the entire object/group/layer level, like a layer opacity. 3dsmax has some thing like this. If this type of a control could be keyframed it would make complex phasing / staging animations possible like Twinmotion can do.
