As the title suggests, I’ve tried importing several different .ply files. However, when I drag them into the scene, all I get is an object icon, and nothing actually appears. The object has zero dimensions.
Why is this happening? I’m working on a large project where I need to import the surrounding environment using Gaussian Splatting. How can I get this to work?
Got it but I’m not very familiar with Sketchfab and whether it provides a search filter that allows users to view all available .ply files, rather than having to search for individual models that use the .ply format.
If you’re unable to provide the files used in your video, please send us a Sketchfab link to a downloadable .ply file that demonstrates the same issue. This will allow us to obtain the file directly and proceed with testing as soon as possible.
I’m starting work on a project where I’ll be creating my own Gaussian Splatting files, and I’d like to use them in D5 Render, so it would be great if this functionality could be fixed and made to work properly.
Thanks for this. I just confirmed with our team regarding this issue.
D5 Render does not support the .ply format as a direct model import. The supported formats for direct import are:
SketchUp (.skp)
Autodesk FBX (.fbx)
D5 model (.d5a)
Rhino (.3dm)
Alembic animated file (.abc)
But .ply is supported in a different context: the XR Tour module.
You can import .ply/.sog files into D5 XR Tour when creating an XR project (via Create > XR Tour > Upload 3DGS File),
Note: This is for 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) point-cloud data, not for importing standard polygonal geometry into the main D5 Render scene.
If you need to bring .ply geometry into D5 Render, the recommended workaround is to convert the .ply file to .fbx or .3dm using your modeling software (e.g., Rhino, Blender, 3ds Max) first, then import the converted file.
