The file crashed during the render process - right at the start. After the crash the file always stops at 43% loading and then the whole computer freezes. I left it for 2 hours at that state, but nothing changed - the computer was still frozen.
Now, I am 90% sure that the problem in the file is the 3D grass - I applied it to a really big surface before the crash. Is there a way to manually delete something in the folders to “disconnect” the link between the surface and 3D grass texture so that the file would open?
Also, as I am unable to see the version history of the file, I have manually tried to copy the backup into the main folder and renaming the .bak file to .drs. That way, I am able to open the backup, but the file is behaving strange. It doesn’t let me select any material (I can’t activate the tool). And when I go to save the file (just a normal save) it freezes again, but when I try to go and save as another file it gives me an error that the file is corrupt. The file is in original location and it is the same name as it was before.
It is somewhat frustrating to see the recovered model there, working - but not being able to use it, save it, work on it…
Common reason for the pop-up error: The save path of the scene file was changed in the computer folder (the file was moved to another location, or the file name was modified), or the files in the scene folder were deleted, in the case of not saving the current scene file. (maybe by accident)
Solution: Move the scene file back to the original path to save it or copy the entire scene file (the entire folder where the .drs file is located) to another storage path, and then use D5 to reopen the scene.
I suppose the path where the files are saved may be wrong due to your computer crashing, please try migrating the whole folder to another location and reopen it. You are able to do the operation in ‘File-Preference’.
I tried what you have suggested @Leah_Li , but to no avail. Firstly I just opened the file that I moved to another location - the same behaviour as before - save and save as not working. Then I tried to migrate the whole folder of assets storage as you suggested - but again, the same problem.
What about the grass and the connection between the texture and model? Can I just delete something in the folder to break the bond?
Sorry for not solving that. These are the steps of how a user who once lost his files due to a computer crash got his files back, and I suppose you could probably give it a try.
Changing the .bak file into .Drs and pasting it in the main file.
Opening that file and inside that open “history version”
We always don’t recommend delete any file in the scene file folder, and the grass and the connection between the texture and model could not be broke by deleting them.
Hope you can retrieve your scene files. Too much terrain grass models do take up a lot of VRAM, which could cause D5 to crash. Next time you could try using the brush and scatter tool, and grass maps in remote areas as well.
