Hi @fmccaffrey
Thank you for providing the log files. Based on our analysis, here is what we found and our recommended next steps:
Root Cause
The “System Environment Error” occurs because D5 Render can’t initialize its D3D12 graphics device properly on your system. The logs show the rendering thread crashes shortly after launch due to a GPU device failure. This appears related to the combination of Windows 11 25H2 (Canary/Preview build) and your current NVIDIA driver; 25H2 is not a stable release channel, and GPU drivers are primarily validated for stable Windows versions (24H2 / 23H2).
The fact that your Launcher also sometimes fails to detect your RTX 4070 correctly (shown as “Unknown Graphics Card” in some startup logs) further confirms this is a GPU driver / OS compatibility issue rather than a problem with D5’s own files, which is why reinstalling D5 has not resolved it.
Note: The overclocking you mentioned is also a very likely contributing factor and should be disabled first, as GPU/memory overclocks commonly cause exactly this type of D3D12 device failure during application startup.
Recommended Steps
-
Disable all overclocking first — disable GPU overclock, XMP/EXPO memory profiles, and CPU overclock. Return everything to stock speeds, then test if D5 launches normally.
-
Roll back to a stable Windows release — Windows 11 25H2 is a Canary/Dev preview build and is not recommended for professional DCC work. If possible, revert to Windows 11 24H2 (stable release).
-
Clean-install an NVIDIA Studio driver — use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) in Safe Mode to fully remove your current driver, then install the NVIDIA Studio driver (597.xx or 596.xx series Studio, not Game Ready / 6xx series).
- For reference, I’m using NVIDIA Drivers 610.74, which I consider pretty stable.
- Try using D5 Render 3.1.1.0.0758 — Please download it using this complete package link: Download Package
