D5 render 95% VRAM usage at all times - Crashes program

Hey! So I started using D5 recently and while I love it I found it quite unstable with it crashing regularly. I noticed that I have 90-97% of VRAM usage at all times no matter what I do (if I create a new file it sits at 30%ish but as soon as I start adding stuff it spikes to 90-100% no matter if I turn everything off or if I switch to the performance quality setting), even if I turn everything off. I have an RTX 5080 16gb VRAM and 32gb of RAM. I have the latest Studio Drivers. What am I doing wrong? Super Resolution and all those DLSS options are enabled. I need it to work more smoothly. Thanks!

Hi @mpindur

Just to confirm, the crash and significant slowdowns are they evident even on empty D5 Files?

  • If you haven’t tried it, please open an empty D5 File and try navigating around it. You’ve mentioned that adding some stuff significantly increases VRAM usage. Is this from D5’s statistics or from your Task Manager?
  • You may also open Residence Lawn to test how it behaves

You may send us a video recording showing the issue.

We also recommend the following:

  1. Ensure that D5 is utilizing your RTX 5080 GPU by temporarily disabling the Intel integrated card.

  2. Try a clean reinstall of your drivers

  3. Ensure that D5 is set at High Performance in NVIDIA Settings.

  4. May we also know the model of your laptop? You may check the built-in application to set the power mode.
    – Example: ROG = Armoury Crate

Hey! Thanks for the reply, so I recorded a few videos so you can better see what is going on. These are Onedrive links, since I dont know how else should I share videos:

DEMO 1: high vram use demo 1.mp4

DEMO 2: high vram use demo 2.mp4

These are 2 examples of projects Im working on, there are many more and this high vram usage happens in all of them. You can see in those 2 videos that the vram usage is constantly between 90-100%. Even if I turn ALL layers off and nothing is on screen, the VRAM remains at 90%+.

HOWEVER, I’ve also experimented with that Residence lawn scene and a new file, and found that VRAM is not high there, in the residence lawn file, VRAM stayed at 30%ish and in a new file it stayed at the same value more or less.

NEW FILE: blank file test.mp4

Even if I added the same sketchup model from the 2nd demo video I shared, the VRAM stays low. This is extremely weird. Because when I removed all assets by turning off the layers in the high vram usage file, the VRAM did not go down. But here, in a blank file with the same 3d model, the VRAM stays low.

And this is not a single case, this happens to ALL my files and projects. They may start with low VRAM usage but eventually they go up to 90%+ VRAM usage.

I’ll attach these 2 projects here in Onedrive links so you can have a look and maybe find what is wrong with them?

Project 1: Project 1

Project 2: Project 2

And to answer your other questions: 1. Ive tried this, no change. 2. I also tried this, I even switched betwen the Game Ready and Studio Drivers, no change. 3. I tried this, no change. 4. The laptop model is a MSI Vector 16 HX AI A2XWIG

Thanks!

Good afternoon, I havent received any other reply to my problem after replying myself and providing videos and the project files. Please, I still need a solution. Thank you

Hi @mpindur

I’m truly sorry for my late response; I overlooked my chance to reply a few days ago. I appreciate your patience as I took the time to review your video recordings and files.

Regarding VRAM Usage

I understand how important it is to have accurate readings for your VRAM usage. To help you with this, I recommend checking the VRAM through either:

  • Task Manager
  • GPU-Z

I want to note that the VRAM statistics in D5 might not update right away after you’ve made significant changes. For instance, if you’ve deleted or hidden a layer, it’s helpful to save your work, close the file, and then reopen it. This process usually ensures that the VRAM percentage is shown correctly.

  • I know this might feel a bit inconvenient, so I truly encourage you to use Task Manager or install GPU-Z. You can keep them open while working with your files, which might make things easier.

Suggestions:

In the video recording, your FPS seems to be doing well and considering navigating through your files are fairly smooth, that’s a good sign. But since you’ve experienced frequent crashes with these files, it might be best to check the following:

As for your files, we were having a hard time downloading them since they are in OneDrive. Can you please generate a link from either Google Drive or WeTransfer? So we can open it on our end and check the VRAM usage on a more powerful device.

  • We recommend zipping these files first then placing it in WeTransfer or Google Driver (ensure permission settings are set accordingly)

Thanks for the reply! I have already checked the VRAM usage shown in the Task Manager, it matches what D5 says at all times. So the D5 statistic is accurate (I checked both at the same time multiple times).

I dont have overclocking enabled.

I tried disabling hardware accelaretd GPU scheduling: no change.

How can I generate a log file? I must say that many (but not all) of the crashes occur when saving. Other crashes occur at random, like, when placing an asset or selecting a scatter area. Also, I have noticed that when the VRAM comes too close to 100%, textures start getting blurry. I have to edit them to restore them to their high quality.

Here’s a Google Drive link with the projects: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1weV_9kMV6mWv9VXFJ9Qm-7ZOUK40TnaQ?usp=sharing

Thank you!

Hi @mpindur

The file is not accessible. If possible, can you try to use WeTransfer?

Can you please try again with this link?

I cant share them via Wetransfer since the files are too big for the Free plan, to upload files that big it asks me to upgrade to the paid plan.

Hi @mpindur

I was able to examine the 2 files that you have provided. I must say that this is a very detailed file with interior elements and landscape design.

  1. Koenigsberg File
  1. Casa Chorizo

Optimization Tips:

  • Reduce texture resolution (use 1K–2K instead of 4K/8K)
  • Remove hidden or unnecessary geometry
  • Use instances instead of importing duplicate models, duplicate assets.
  • Limit high-poly assets (especially vegetation and detailed props)
  • Lower reflection, shadow, and lighting quality during editing
  • Minimize number of real-time lights and shadow casters. This includes caustics, etc.
  • Avoid excessive glass or reflective materials
  • Hide objects not visible in the camera view
  • Split very large scenes into smaller files if needed
  • Import models once, then duplicate inside D5 (don’t re-import from SketchUp multiple times)
  • Disable Path Tracing and enable Smooth Mode when you’re navigating through your model.
  • Disable Dynamic mode temporarily, this will stop any movement made from any assets.

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to look through the files. As for your theme question: yes! it’s a horror project I’m working on, so I’m glad you find it eerie haha

So, what you’re saying is that there is no problem with my D5 installation, it’s just that the files are simply too heavy. But, my problem is: even if I turn off every asset, to reduce the VRAM usage, it doesnt go down, it stays at 95%ish. I tried using the smoot mode, but the VRAM stayed put. That’s the biggest problem, that no matter what I do, the VRAM does not go down.

Thanks!
