D5 Render causes black screen and automatic restart – RTX 3060 12GB
Hi everyone,
I’m experiencing a recurring issue when using D5 Render. Whenever I try to render a scene, my computer eventually goes to a black screen and restarts automatically.
This has happened consistently since I first used it a year ago and gave up trying to make it work on this PC. However, the same computer works normally with other applications, including Revit and several video games.
PC specifications
•CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G
•GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 12GB
•RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz
•Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO WIFI
•Storage: Western Digital WD10EZEX 1TB HDD
•GPU Driver: NVIDIA 621.01 (Driver version 32.0.16.2101, dated October 19, 2026)
•Operating System: Windows 11 Pro
•D5 Render: Latest available version
•PSU: EVGA 600 BR (100-BR-0600-K1), 600W, 80 PLUS Bronze
What happens?
When rendering in D5 Render, the screen goes black. After a while, the computer restarts automatically.
After restarting, Windows sometimes displays a “Scanning and repairing drive” message.
This issue does not seem to occur when using Revit or playing several video games.
Windows error information
I checked Windows Reliability Monitor and found a LiveKernelEvent 117.
I also analyzed the dump file using WinDbg. The analysis reported:
- Bugcheck: VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED (117)
- Failure bucket: LKD_0x117_IMAGE_nvlddmkm.sys
- Module: nvlddmkm.sys
- Process: System
- Description: The display driver failed to respond in a timely fashion.
- The stack trace includes dxgmms2!VidSchiReportHwHang.
Additional checks
So far, I have checked the following:
- GPU temperature at idle: approximately 45.5°C.
- GPU hotspot at idle: approximately 53.1°C.
- GPU power consumption at idle: approximately 16–17W.
- PCI Express error counter: currently 0 (previous maximum reading was 94).
- Windows SFC scan: no integrity violations found.
- Windows reports both detected storage devices as Healthy.
All of this info is with the pc at rest, not while using d5 as I’m scared of possibly damaging my GPU
I haven’t performed a GPU stress test yet, and I haven’t confirmed the PSU model.
Questions
- Could this be a D5 Render compatibility or driver issue?
- Has anyone experienced this LiveKernelEvent 117 / nvlddmkm.sys error with D5 Render?
- Could D5’s rendering workload expose a GPU power delivery or stability issue even though other games and Revit work normally?
- Are there specific D5 settings or troubleshooting steps you would recommend?
I’d appreciate any suggestions. I’m trying to determine whether this is a software/driver issue or a hardware-related problem.
Thank you!
