Why do I still use Lumion for my large-scale projects?

I’m coming to the end of production of a relatively important project and I’d like to give a little feedback after having hesitated for a long time between using Lumion or D5. In the end, it was Lumion who won the game again but I would like to be able to make full use of D5 next time. These are the points of improvement or missing in my opinion to finally outclass Lumion.
-First, a much more advanced support for the FBX. In particular the hierarchy of the file (for phase animation in particular…) but also and above all the camera support. I need to import the camera animation and the simple animation of the scene objects as well. All this while always having the possibility to update a source FBX file with which D5 can update.
-Next, a function of aging or imperfection textures in different styles. I use this function almost automatically because it brings a lot of realism to the renderings.
-Better support for pivot and orientation points of imported objects. Consistently placing the pivot point at the bottom center of the object limits the possibilities of animation. We have to have a choice when it comes to imports.
-The ability to colorize assets such as people. The function already exists for low poly styled assets. It would be nice if it was the same for all assets.
-Better support for .abc as well. Import of the hierarchy. Import of the visibility attribute. Correct import of non-triangulated files.

That’s my 2 cents to make D5 evolve in the right direction. D5 has a very strong potential in my opinion a better asset library, a best feeling usage and I would really like to be able to make the switch.

And finally, a preview at the time of export would be a plus, that’s often when you realize the things you forget and realizing it only after an export is frustrating.

Thanks

correct on some situation d5 render need to improve to be better than Lumion

  • asset people
  • asset cars
  • age weathering of material (AO/rougness in d5 now is not enough)
  • importing model types (incl animation)
  • PT render
  • water/ocean

PT render? what is this? I’m currious…

Path Tracer render

Lumion has it TM has it

d5 has raytracing.

PT render is slower but better
so an option for PT render is needed to compete

Lumion is considered to have the best vegetation assets for my industry of Landscape Design, D5 is 2nd or 3rd in this regard (Chaos Cosmos is also quite vast). It probably helps that they are also based in Europe like I am, so they naturally favour European plant varieties. I spent a full year deciding between D5, Lumion, V-ray/Vantage and Twinmotion as my rendering software for the next few years, and I chose D5 because I expect it to be leading the way in many of the key features that we all require in the coming years because they seem to be developing and growing at the fastest rate - in my first few months of using D5 I feel like I have made the correct choice .

One thing I really would like to see from D5 would be a more user friendly interface, more similar to Lumion and Twinmotion. I feel ike I need less preview image space and easier to find features/functions.

isn’t it perfect that we can chat about how to make it better and the D5 team is live here to respond? I do not think other rivals do such a great job. They all do have forums and they are all online but the recommendations from users will not apply to further upgrades this fast!

Thank you D5 team

Hi there @3DG

You may request specific plant assets you want us to include for future releases. Just be sure to include the image and the scientific name; we are trying our best to cater to user’s preferences regarding plant varieties.

Anyway, thank you for your insights regarding our User Interface. We will take this into consideration. :bowing_man:

After using lumion for a few years and switching to D5 the last two years , I do like the assortment and high quality of D5’s vegetation . I’m sure Lumion has been adding to their library too . I definitely think D5 needs to upgrade their foliage materials to be more accurate when it comes to light transmission , and would love to see the ability to animate custom imported vegetation with wind even if it wasn’t initially made as an animated abc file . Twinmotion gives that possibility . I also think introduction of Pathtracing will help a lot of D5 vegetation and grass to look more realistic .
