Detailed introduction to some features
Render
1. Ocean
Introduces Ocean to simulate realistic waves, coastlines, foam, water materials, and physical interactions between water and objects. By adding an Ocean object, a dynamic ocean surface can be created efficiently, with automatic detection of the scene’s terrain range to generate seamless and natural transitions from ocean to coast.
-
Ocean Creation
-
Supports adding ocean from the top toolbar > Terrain.

-
An ocean object is automatically created upon selection and appears in the Resource List.
-
When ocean is selected, its corresponding control panel appears on the right sidebar, enabling adjustments to coastline range, waves, and materials.
-
-
Surface: Controls offshore large-scale waves and seawater materials.
-
General settings:
- Height: Controls the sea level height.
- Wave Scale: Controls the horizontal size of waves. The larger the value, the wider the wave crest.
- Wave Height: Controls the vertical amplitude of the wave crest, affecting the wave’s volumetric effect.
- Speed: Controls the flow speed of ocean waves.
-
Material settings:
- Affects the entire ocean surface material.
- Absorption: Controls the degree of light absorption in water. Higher values result in deeper water color.
- Scattering: Controls the light scattering effect, affecting water turbidity and volumetric effect.
- Depth: Controls the surface transparency.
-
Underwater Volumetric Effect
- Supports simulation of underwater light scattering and turbidity to enhance realism.
-
-
Coastline: Controls the effects of nearshore waves, foams, intertidal zone, and transition from land to ocean.
-
Automatic Coastline Generation
- Supports automatic detection of intersections between terrain/geometry and the ocean surface to generate a coastline with tidal and caustic effects near the shore.
- Range: For now, the coastline covers a 5120m*5120m area and doesn’t allow adjustments.
-
General settings:
- Size: Controls the width of the area where wave appears.
- Nearshore Wave Speed: Controls the movement speed of waves near the coastline.
- Nearshore Wave Width: Controls the wave coverage range near the coastline.
- Foam Intensity: Controls the foam brightness.
- Offshore Foam Size: Controls the distribution and size of foam at the boundary between the ocean surface and the coastline.
-
Coastline Anchor
- Supports select objects from the viewport or the resource list as the Coastline Anchor, around which the coastline will be automatically generated.
- Supports individual objects only. Grouped/path-based/scattered/.abc objects are not supported.
- The coastline area updates dynamically with any addition/deletion/modification of anchor objects, similar to the cull effect of D5 Scatter.
- Allows up to 50 objects to be set as Coastline Anchors.
-
Auto-refresh of Coastline Range: The following actions lead to auto-refresh of the coastline rage:
- Adjust ocean surface height
- Sculpt and modify terrain
- Modify terrain range
- Add Coastline Anchor objects
-
Manual Refresh of Coastline Range: The following actions require manual refresh of the coastline rage:
- Delete/edit Coastline Anchor objects
-
Coastline Material settings
- Based on the height difference between the ocean surface and the ground: as the distance decreases, the color shifts toward the coastline material; as the distance increases, it shifts toward the ocean surface material.
- Absorption: Controls the dark-to-light transition of nearshore water material.
- Scattering: Controls the water turbidity near the shore to create a natural shallow water area.
-
2. Displacement Material (beta)
Integrates True Displacement into the Displacement material template, achieving realistic relief and bumps by altering physical model geometry rather than relying solely on a parallex effect.
-
Displacement Types
- Parallax Displacement (Original): Simulates the bumpy visual effect through material shading without modifying the physical model geometry, resulting in lower resource requirement and faster rendering speed.
- True Displacement (New): Modifies the physical model geometry based on the Height map to create realistic bumps and undulations, making it suitable for high-precision materials and close-up shots.
-
How to Use
- Pick up a material and select the Displacement material template.
- Insert a Height map and enable True Displacement within More Settings.
- Note: The “More Settings” menu is not available when the Height map is missing.
-
True Displacement Settings
- Subdivision Level: Controls the number of mesh subdivisions. Note: Higher Subdivision Levels create finer displacement effects, but it will increase the number of geometries, thus increasing memory usage and rendering time. Please set an appropriate value based on the hardware performance.
- Vertical Offset: The current displacement algorithm elevates geometry along its normal while preserving the model’s original position. When the model is positioned on the ground, this can result in a visual effect where the model appears raised. To address this issue, Vertical Offset can be applied to adjust the model’s overall position. By fine-tuning the offset value, the model remains aligned with the ground, preventing floating or clipping artifacts.
- Maintain Continuity: Ensures the model’s solid structure remains closed and complete, preventing fractures or cavities.
-
Remesh: Improves the model topology quality to fix issues such as inconsistent triangle sizes or messy topology.
- Off: Subdivision is based on the original topology.
- On: Subdivision is based on the reconstructed meshes.
-
Note:
- The True Displacement toggle is disabled for live-synced models, which currently don’t support true displacement.
- To apply true displacement on live-synced models, please first convert them into non-live-sync status by selecting the models from the Resource List and right-clicking to activate the “Non-Live sync” mode. However, this setting will become ineffective if the model is replaced later through LiveSync plugins, and the True Displacement option will become unavailable again.
3. Volumetric Clouds and Cloud Presets
Introduces Volumetric Clouds with cloud presets and advanced settings, enabling authentic volumetric effects and flexible sky appearance creation.
-
Added Volumetric Clouds to Environment > Weather.
-
Contains multiple built-in cloud presets including Cumulus, Stratocumulus, Stratus, Altocumulus, Cumulonimbus, Cirrus Clouds, and Clear Blue Sky.
-
Advanced Cloud Settings: Contains advanced options to customize the cloud appearance for different weather and lighting conditions.
-
Compatibility
- When opening scenes created with earlier versions of D5 Render, the cloud effects remain consistent with the original scene.
- Includes a “Legacy” preset for compatibility with historical projects.
4. Optimized Fog
-
Separation of Color and Density
- Separated the Color and Density settings, enabling more intuitive operations.
- Color controller: Determines the fog color and brightness.
- Density slider: Density becomes an independent setting with a smooth linear response to slider adjustments and an expanded value range.
-
Added Intensity Follows Skylight
-
Controls whether the fog brightness is affected by skylight.
- When enabled, the fog brightness changes with the skylight intensity, creating a natural and consistent appearance.
- When disabled, the fog brightness is independent from the skylight intensity.
-
Default settings:
- When a new project is created, “Intensity Follows Skylight” is checked by default.
- In previous projects, “Intensity Follows Skylight” is disabled by default to ensure compatibility with the original fog effect.
-
-
Added Base Height
-
Base Height offers a larger value range and more precise control than the previous Height option.
- Range: -1000 m ~ 0 m ~ 1000 m with a default value of 0 m.
-
Optimizied logic:
- The position of the fog layer’s base (lowest point) in the previous version was automatically calculated based on the model’s bounding box, potentially causing the fog layer height to shift unexpectedly as the camera or model changes.
- The new version enables manual setting of the fog’s base height, ensuring stable fog layer height across scenes.
-
-
Optimized Parameter Names and Interactions
- Renamed the Falloff parameter as “Height”, and improves the slider interaction with a smooth linear response.
-
Note: When opening and saving a project made with earlier versions in D5 3.0, and then opening it again in D5 2.11, the fog effect may change, which requires manual adjustments to corresponding settings.
5. Enhanced Light Intensity Control for Geo Sky with Adjusted Default Intensity
- Added Sunlight Intensity, Sky Background, and Ambient Light Compensation to Geo Sky > Intensity. Supports adjusting the Sunlight intensity and Sky Background intensity separately, which are linked with each other by default.
- Supports flexible control over the influence of sky light on scene illumination and overall light contrast, without affecting the sky color, via the Ambient Light Compensation option.
- Three intensity options:
- Sunlight Intensity: Controls the direct light intensity.
- Sky Background: Controls the brightness and saturation of the sky background.
- Ambient Light Compensation: Controls the influence of sky light on the illumination of the scene, without affecting the blue tint of the sky. It can be used to fine-tune the light contrast.
- Legacy project compatibility: When opening previous scenes and enabling advanced intensity parameters, the system will automatically calculate these parameters to ensure outputs remain consistent with the previous versions, avoiding brightness differences.
- Adjusted Geo Sky Default Intensity: Optimized the default brightness of the Geo Sky to achieve natural initial illumination in new projects.
6. Added Custom Background Color to Effects
-
Added Custom Background Color to Effect>Style for a flexible control over the background color in the 3D viewport.

-
This feature meets the request of custom background color in specific projects, such as rendering composition materials or parallel projection views.
-
Notes:
- Parameter priority: This setting will be overridden by the background color set in the Outline mode. Disable the Outline mode to restore the custom background color.
- This parameter only affects the viewport background and does not change models, environment lighting, or reflections.
7. Supports Cull Distance for Content Outside the Viewport
- Added Outside the Viewport option to Preference > Rendering > Cull Distance, which controls the visibility range for content outside the viewport. This setting affects both the viewport and image/video outputs.
- Best Practice: Enable this option to fix the issue where a plant behind the camera disappears from the transparent material reflections.
