Water material moves the surface (livesync with 3dsmax)

Hello,

I’m trying to add a water material to a surface I previously modeled in 3dsmax. When the material is applied, the modeled surface begins to shift along the x-y axes.

I’ve tried subdividing the poly in 3dsmax, but the same thing keeps happening. Both the .max and d5 files are in cm, as I thought it was a scaling issue.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi @torres-andres

  • May I know which version of the plug-in you are currently using?
  • If this specific model is brought to D5 Render by Direct Import or d5a import, does this issue occur?
  • I would like to test these files ( D5 Render and 3dsMax File) on my end and see if I can replicate it. Please send it to support@d5techs.com and have it titled ‘Clov-Forum Water Material Moves the Surface’

Note: Please send the whole D5 file folder.

Hi, @Clov

  • version 1.3.0.0002
  • It also happens if I export the model, that is, without livesync
  • I’ll send the files in a bit, thanks

Hi @torres-andres

I can’t seem to find the email. Please let me know if you were able to send it already.

Hi, I sent it on Friday

Hi @torres-andres

We were able to test your file from scratch (using the 3dsMax Model you have sent). And the problem is also evident on our end, it seems that this issue stems from the 3dsMax Model, and disabling the “Dynamic” icon stops it from moving. We have forwarded this issue further to our team.

Ok, I understand. I hope there’s a solution in the future. I tried updating lyvesinc, importing the file directly, etc., and nothing seemed to fix it.

I appreciate your time, thanks.

Hi @torres-andres

Upon further investigation and testing, it seems that this problem is because of the Refraction. You can either do the following:

Hi,

I’d already tried that, but setting the refraction to 1 or removing the normal leaves a flat, motionless surface. It doesn’t look like a pool. I’d like to add some small waves from the normal wind movement.

From my ignorance, I’d believe it’s some error in geometry or flow velocity (how those two things interact). Perhaps because it’s an undivided surface, the water’s material causes it to move all over (although I’ve already tried subdividing it, and that didn’t work either).

Thank you again for your time. I’ll keep trying to find the error.

Hi @torres-andres

Upon further testing, the issue stems from the “Skin Wrap Patch” Object Space Modifier.

Note: We’ve noticed that the model is only an editable polygon, and there are no additional UV commands. This may also cause D5 to be unable to read the UV information of this part of the model.

Hi,
I’ve also been trying a few things, and I think the solution is:

  1. Apply a UVW modifier in 3dsmax, as you mentioned.
  2. Apply any material from 3dsmax (at least in my case, just adding the UVW didn’t work).
  3. Change the material to Water in d5.
  4. I’ve attached an image of the result and the material configuration. I still need to modify some things, but I think it’s resolved.

P.S.: I don’t have the “Skin Wrap Patch” modifier in my .max file. I don’t know when it was added, or what it’s for honestly.

Alright, thanks for the update!
