Translucent material artifacts

Hi,

I am attempting to create an atmospheric effect, of the blue haze around the earth. I have tried transparent materials, cloth, water, and pretty much an/all others. The closest I can get is with the water material, and deleting the normal map, turning down the velocity to zero, and tweaking the depth so that the density only increases the more oblique the angle. However, as you can see, there is this weird diagrid artifact that shows up as a cast shadow onto the earth’s surface below it. I included two images, one with it turned on, one with it turned off. The model is made with three spheres; one for the water and land, one for the clouds, and one for the atmosphere above. Any ideas on why this is happening, or a better way to great a blue glowing haze around the planet? thx…

Hi @mcdermoa

Sorry for the inconvenience. To investigate further, can you share your D5 project folder and collect your log files using the support tool. How to use Support Tool? | User Manual

Please upload the files via WeTransfer and send me the download link privately so the issue can be replicated and analyzed. Thank you. https://wetransfer.com/

Ela,

Do you always have to have my file in order to answer the questions? I don’t mean for that to sound rude, it is genuine question. Often the work is not sharable for NDA reasons, and seems as though the first response to any question is to ask for our files first. You could very easily just create two nested spheres, apply glass to the outter one, and recreate the issue yourself on that end. If it works fine there, then at least we can establish that the issue may be with my file, and I don’t have to wait the 24 hr cycle for a response. Again, I don’t mean for that to sound rude, as often can be misinterpreted when not speaking directly.

thanks for you help!

Hi @mcdermoa

Thank you for your thoughtful message, and please don’t worry—your question is completely understandable.

I’m sorry if this wasn’t clear earlier. We do try to reproduce reported issues on our end first before requesting project files. In this case, I was not able to recreate the issue using test scenes, which is why I asked for your file. We usually request the project file and log files so we can test them on our device to identify whether the problem is file-specific or environment-specific. And if needed, report the issue to our dev team for further investigation or possible workarounds.

We completely understand NDA limitations—please let us know if sharing files isn’t possible, and we’ll do our best to troubleshoot in other ways.

Thank you for your understanding.
