Revit Links Scatter Crash

Hi all!

I’ve been having some issues with scatter areas, it has happened twice now where a scatter area gets “corrupted”. When I click on the scatter area within the browser or in the workspace D5 crashes and closes. It recently happened on a bigger file, after I linked a site with a model (Revit Links), thereafter I can no longer update the scatter area or delete it, it just crashes when I click on it (I am able to hide it… possible workaround, but it stays within the file and can cause crashes if I click on it). I’m hoping someone can tell me of a workaround to delete this scatter area, I cannot get it out of my file.

I am hoping that in the future we can get some type of file editor, where you can delete assets and scatter areas without opening the file to work around this issue.

Looking forward to feedback

Hi @shaunwillemse1411

I apologize for the inconvenience. Can you send us the following information:

Hi Clov,

Thank you so much for the reply, to clarify the current file is not that heavy…, please see file size below. My laptop is able to handle the scatter areas, without too much lag.

Thank you for the help, please let me know if you need anything else.

Please also let me know if there is any way for me to delete scatter areas without opening the revit file.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Kind regards
Shaun

Hi @shaunwillemse1411

Alright, so basically, the crash only occurs when you click the scatter (as you have mentioned), but your device does not have any issues opening it and navigating through the preview screen?

Let me know if you have sent it.

Hi Clov,

Yes I am able to navigate through the project, it only crashes when I click on the scatter area in the project. I am able to render and everything else, except click on the scatter area to regenerate it.

I’ve just emailed you the logs and scene file.

Just fyi, the scatter area that crashes is the one at the entrance gate, I think its SR - Entrance Planter or something. I have a feeling it has to do with the fact that I used a “Studio Scatter” from a previous project, but I cant be sure. (The previous project that had this issue used the same Studio Scatter) This however only started after splitting the house from the site using revit links (scatter area also changed).

Thank you for the help. I really appreciate it!

Hi @shaunwillemse1411

We have received your files and will be testing it asap. Thank you.

Hi @shaunwillemse1411

I’m able to open your file and regenerate the Scatter SR - Entrance Planter. I have also checked the VRAM Consumption, and it’s consuming 15 GB, which is more than the VRAM of your device.

  • Please try to access the file version history of your file and see if you can open and click the specific scatter area without crashing.
    version history
  • If it still does not work, please refer to my pm, I have a detailed explanation of deleting the f2 folder.

Hi Clov,

Thank you so much for your help with this.
I really appreciate the feedback and help.

I want to find out why the VRAM usage is so high. Do I have too much planting?
Its just strange that some of the bigger scatter areas can be regenerated but not this smaller entrance planter one…

Also what would happen if I do delete the F2 folder as you mentioned in the PM.

Is there no way for me to delete the scatter area without opening the file?
I would like to request that there be some type of file editor where you can delete elements / scatter areas without opening the file, in order to work around these types of issues.

Thanks so much!
Shaun

Hi @shaunwillemse1411

High VRAM Usage may be caused by the following:

  • Assets: Generally, assets that are highly defined and have a great quantity (e.g. scatter) are usually the culprit.
  • Other environmental settings also play a role (e.g Path Tracing, Fog, Volume Light)
  • Please also check if other software is in use while D5 is running.

Deleting the f2 folder will cause all of your assets to lose their physical appearance temporarily; basically, it will look like white squares with icons. It can easily be restored after opening the while and updating the asset, but please do this after the scatter has been deleted.
