Re-installing Windows - how does it affect the projects - source file issue

Hello everyone,

I am about to reinstall fresh windows(also moving from Win 10 to 11)
I do this annually and always have to reinstall every software to freshen up everything. I know this is not the best usage of Windows but I have done it for years now.

The point is I do not have good experience moving source files for D5 (SketchUp files in this case). Every time I did this, it reset the whole scene lighting, and I had to do all the setups again. This is so terrifying for me so I have not freshened up the PC since I have been using D5 (a year now).

I am doing large projects for my clients but still not familiar with how this sync and connection between the source file and D5 works.

This is my situation:

I have a source SketchUp file stored on my desktop(I started the project there and still I am scared of moving or renaming it after a couple of months!)
I run D5 and load the project from there and use live sync from SketchUp (or run it directly from SketchUp sometimes)

My D5 folder is stored on DropBox (knowing that this is not recommended by the D5 team but I have to do it as the client asks and I am short on the hard drive)

Almost all the assets I put in are stored under the SketchUp model in D5

I need to manage these whole files and folders to be able to load and work on them after reinstalling the fresh windows and also in the far future if any revisions are needed.

The way I reinstall the windows is not through an online procedure. I Format my C drive and reinstall the Windows using offline files. So the desktop and C drive will be deleted and I have to move the source file from there.

I know this might be silly but I am concerned about my situation and love to solve it once and for all.

Thank you!

Hi there,

I understand your hesitation to move these files, as it could break the connection between your DCC software and D5 Render. For convenience, I typically keep the 3D modelling file and the D5 Render project folder in the same directory.

  • However, if the link is broken, you can easily restore it by opening the original SketchUp file and then syncing with the local D5 Render project (Your D5 Render file that you were working with). As long as you did not rename that file, it should be okay (as I have tried it).

  • Indeed, we don’t recommend opening the D5 Render file while it is still stored in the Cloud Storage but you can download it, and then after making some necessary changes, you may reupload it again. We have yet to optimize the use of cloud storage with d5 render and this may be the best workaround for this kind of workflow, sorry for that.

  • If you want to be 100% sure, I do recommend doing a dry run when you transfer your files. Perhaps, you can transfer it to another computer and test if the linkage between the 2 software may malfunction.

Hope this helps, thank you.

Thank you @clovisbolasco14
I copied the Sketchup file into the cloud, renamed it, and synced it with the project file.
It looks like everything is okay but I will do some tests to ensure everything is good. Since the last time I did this, everything was not fine.

Thanks!
