I am experiencing an issue with D5 where I get the message “Out of memory, close some apps…”. RAM hoovers around 27-28 GB in this work file (out of the 32 GB).
I would assume that this is related to RAM and not GPU VRAM. I usually have SketchUp and D5 opened when doing my renders.
The issue that I am facing is that occasionally D5 crashes. I am doing a full apartment render of multiple rooms (approx. 100 square meters for the whole apartment).
My specs are as follows:
RTX 3070 8GB
32 GB DDR4
I7 10700k
Full HD monitor 60Hz
Driver: 511.65 (studio driver)
I am thinking if I should get more RAM (currently I have 4 sticks of 8GB) but first want to check with you if you have any tips and tricks how to prevent the crashes that I experience?
It’s always better to have 64 Ram.
I also notice that I am reaching the limits with 32 Ram.
You can see it in the “Task Manager” under performance always on limit, with large data
I see. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me @dadi . Are you planing to upgrade to 64 GB of RAM as well or? How are you currently handling your work files with 32 GB?
I work with laptop RTX 2070, i7 Intel, 32 GB ) but my secretary has already confiscated it.
So there will be a new one with 64 ram.
I’ll definitely look for a “game laptop” which will have the benefits.
In the office we have almost no workstation since we had “home office”.
We found that one is much more flexible, easier to work with laptop. Today the performances of the laptop have become much better. Working with 2 monitors is great in the office and 2 at home.
Many of my friends in the architecture office are slowly doing this too.
When your memory usage reaches 80%, this hint will appear.
This is a little tip that we added in version 2.1, please don’t panic, it doesn’t mean that D5 takes up more memory in version 2.1 (on the contrary, it takes up less memory).
If you can manage your memory usage well, you can continue your operation.
we will optimize this hint in future releases.
Hi @whao. Thanks for the elaboration of how it works in the background. The problem is that both D5 and Sketchup would randomly crash after RAM reaches levels of 28-29 GB of the 32 available.
I upgraded today to 64 GB so I will se how it goes
@whao what are usually the most RAM consuming things that I should keep an eye out?
Hey @FlatBlack722 I believe you should be careful with DOF, Tyndall effect, and high-resolution maps. Multiple reflections also affect, so try adjusting specular to 0 for distant materials. You can also turn on DLSS, that might help.
How has 64 gb of ram been working for you. I have the same running out of memory issue with 32 so Im thinking about upgrading to 64 but not sure if it will help my scenes hold up while I work. (I use a lot of heavy assets, trees, grass etc.)
Hi @fighunn. Since I upgraded to 64 GB I have not been experiencing any memory issues. Both D5 and in my case Sketchup take up quite some RAM when working on larger scenes so I would go for the upgrade in your case.
