Lumenious D5 vs Real Lumens

Hello everyone,
I’m trying to match the real-world lighting in my D5 Render project.

I used a lamp that says 900 lumens on the product spec, but in D5 it looks too bright and not realistic.

My questions:

  • Is 900 lumens too strong in D5?
  • Should I adjust the camera exposure or other settings?
  • Any tips to make the lighting look like the real product?
  • Do I need to use IES files for better results?

Hi @media.karimgroup

Exposure and Sunlight also plays a huge part in brightening the scene. You can set it the exposure to 0 or simply test it on a Night Scene so you can see how 900 lumens look like.

  • This is the test I made on my end using Residence Lawn, the room is quite dark and exposure is set to 0

Hello,
I am having the same issue. I am trying to reproduce realistic views for natural and artificial lighting analysis.
When I follow the specs of the products, such as bulbs of 600 lumens, and apply them to my spotlights, the scene looks unrealistically bright.
Were you able to adjust the lighting in your project and if so what did you change, and how did you calculate the intensity?
Thank you!

Hi @minawr00

Can you send us a screenshot or render? I may also need to confirm the accuracy of Lumens and Light Asset’s value. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Hello @Clov,

I’m trying to recreate a realistic night scene using this downlight:

This is what I have so far:

I’ve input the same lumen value (850 lm) as the product specs, but my render is coming out unrealistically bright.

Here’s a screenshot of my current environment and effect settings:

Am I missing something or misconfiguring a setting?

Thanks!

Hi @minawr00

Our team has confirmed that the light assets themselves are accurate. However, the issue you’ve encountered is a known limitation where artificial lights appear overly bright due to our current sunlight system. This is a known issue, and it will be further improved in future version release.

For now, I suggest modifying the Environment or Effect parameters.

Until the lighting system is accurate based off ies files in D5, id recommend D5 add a quick fix of adjusting intensity of all artificial lights per scene . Let’s say, there was an effect button that lets you automatically boost or reduce the lights intensity per scene . That way you can reduce them during day scenes and boost them at night scenes .

Hi @aaime

Thanks for your insights and feedback. I also recommend putting them in Ideas and Requests.

May I ask—do you normally place lights in the host application or directly in D5? Personally, I don’t think the lumen values in D5 are accurate. It seems D5 is designed more for archviz presentation than for designers who need precision.

I’ve been using D5 more as a design and lighting analysis tool, where accuracy is more important than creating a dramatic look with multiple artificial or unrealistic light sources. Because of this, I often have to rework all my lighting in Dialux to achieve correct settings.i don’t expect d5 has much feature compare to dialux but at least some meaningful way to use the IES. Many times I created the beautiful Scence but fail to provide the IMFORMATION about light placement and settings back to our team

I believe D5 has the potential to be on par with Dialux, if only it could provide features such as a separate lighting report or at least a summary of all lighting setting used in a scene. That kind of output would make it far more valuable for design workflows, not just visualisation.
