Local libary between laptop and computer

I’m planning to buy a good laptop next year and I would also like to put my local library online. I know Google Drive is not the best option (and it will fill up quickly anyway).

Would it be possible to host this on a NAS instead? If so, what kind of specs or features should the NAS have to handle this properly? Also, would I only be able to access the library when I’m on my local Wi-Fi, or is there a way to reach the NAS when I’m abroad with my laptop?

Alternatively, is there another way to keep my local library synchronized and accurate on both my desktop and laptop, without constantly copying everything manually?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hi @3d-ontwerp-visualisa

To clarify, you’re using D5 PRO, correct? I may need to confirm the stability of using NAS for storing the Local Library in the Pro version. Although you’re welcome, and I think it follows the same logic as to how the Teams Library are set up.

Yes, I’m using the Pro version — I’ll check out the links, thanks!

Are there any specific requirements or recommendations for the NAS to ensure good stability and connection with D5? For example, should I look for certain specs, protocols, or network options when buying one?

Besides the basic storage capacity, what kind of specs (CPU, RAM, network speed) are recommended for running D5’s library smoothly on a NAS? And are there best practices for remote access (VPN, cloud sync, etc.) so I can also connect when I’m abroad?

I’m quite new to NAS devices, so I’d really appreciate advice on what features I should ask for or prioritize before going to a shop.

Hi @3d-ontwerp-visualisa

The biggest drawback for this is regarding its stability, especially syncing process and workflow related issues which usually occurs if network has stopped or delayed data transmitting.

  • As for the VPN, i think you can check SSL VPN. As far as I know, this will enable you to access your NAS even when you’re travelling overseas. Although I’m not sure if other VPN has this feature, you can try browsing if there are some highly suggested VPNs other than the one i suggested.
