Would it be possible to host this on a NAS instead? If so, what kind of specs or features should the NAS have to handle this properly? Also, would I only be able to access the library when I’m on my local Wi-Fi, or is there a way to reach the NAS when I’m abroad with my laptop?
Alternatively, is there another way to keep my local library synchronized and accurate on both my desktop and laptop, without constantly copying everything manually?

The biggest drawback for this is regarding its stability, especially syncing process and workflow related issues which usually occurs if network has stopped or delayed data transmitting.
As for the VPN, i think you can check SSL VPN. As far as I know, this will enable you to access your NAS even when you’re travelling overseas. Although I’m not sure if other VPN has this feature, you can try browsing if there are some highly suggested VPNs other than the one i suggested.
