Height map does not work on its own

I am trying to transfer my workflow from enscape to D5.

In enscape you have an empty diffuse slot, load up a bump map into the height map and get either a bump or displacement effect true to the bump map with the material being just the generic colour in the diffuse.

In D5 If I load a simple linear bump map into the height slot, it shows nothing, no matter what scale. If I load it into the normal slot, it has some effect but it does not scale as per the bump map I loaded. The only way I can get just a bump to work is to toggle on the true displacement but whether i’m using subdivision or height field tracking, the corners of the geometry will never perfectly align or clean up no matter where I set the vertical offset. This is a real issue for clean geometry like timbers boards or siding. You can get away with it on really rough natural materials like stone somewhat.

If I can load jpegs here I will show you what I typically get from Enscape VS D5. The bump map is a simple black and white line where the black is approximately 1/4 vs 3/4 white in thickness

I was so excited to transfer to this software and the fact that something as simple as this seems so difficult has made me re-think whether I can.
