Hi everyone, I would like to buy the new surface 8 to use it as home computer. Can anyone tell me if by adding an external graphics card (an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER) I can run d5 render?
Thank you,
Massimo

EGPUs are usually connected to laptops or desktop computers via the Thunderbolt 3 interface. But even Thunderbolt 3 isn’t fast enough to transfer data bandwidths at a speed similar to that of their desktop counterparts.
In fact, the graphics cards have to get by with around 21 GBit / s, while internal GPUs work at 26 GBit / s. In other words: An eGPU only works at around 70 to 80 percent of the speed of an identical graphics card that is installed internally.
If you regularly do graphically complex tasks, it is currently better to invest in a more powerful graphics card or in a more powerful laptop.
Thank you for the answer.
Right now in my office i have a powerful computer to work with d5 render. What I’m looking for is a laptop to occasionally work with from home. It doesn’t have to be particularly powerful, but only allow me to open d5 files to make some changes. What do you think about this:
Surface Book 3 13.5 "
10th Gen Intel & Core ™ * i7 Processor
256GB • Go, 16GB • Go RAM
NVIDIA® GeForce © GTX 1650 4GB GPU
do you think this is enough?
I think the size makes the difference between the Surface and a laptop as well as the price.
The technical data are very good. I also bought a laptop to use at home. Today I am happy that I have a laptop with RTX 3070 and D5. I even work with it in the office.
Sooner or later, performance is what counts.
Here are some suggestions from the Nivedia website that might help you a little:

Hello, GTX 1650 cannot work with D5, please notice this point.
The xx50 series, like 1050, 1650, or even 3050, are not compatible with D5 Render.
