D5 Lite - Writing from Enscape user perspective

hi team,

Writing this as I recently saw the last bit of 2.11 promo video. I understand D5 is currently building a plugin version of D5.

8 years of Enscape user here. I think it is a great timing for D5 to go tackle Enscape market, if the product works and functions properly.

I believe one of the keys to this would be to enable a very smooth transition from Enscape → D5, especially the material conversion part. You probably already understand an office that has been using Enscape for past 8 years would be all its project materials and lighting setup using Enscape’s PBR editor. If D5 Lite could somehow do a seamless conversion behind-the-scene, like with a click of “Start” button and the viewport gives user a 95% similar look of Enscape - then that would be a good headstart.

Some other things to consider if you want to tackle this market:

  • Very similar navigation as Enscape
  • Don’t expect users to spend a lot of time converting existing Enscape material into D5 system
  • Port all Favourite Views + View Templates that has already been setup in Enscape into D5 Lite
  • Better camera parameter handling (taking what has been set up)
  • Better video editor

Wishing the team good luck and looking forward to seeing what you can come up with.

I made the move from Enscape a couple of years ago and for the first year I had both running side by side in case I needed to go back to an old project, but I’ve not regretted leaving for a single moment. I do miss two things though, the way they host panoramas and generate a QR code was a great time saver, also the standalone executable file was often useful, but I believe both of those features are coming to D5.
