D5 Cannot Turn on Terrain

I have a rhino model linked into D5 render. It has its own toposurface however I also had the D5 terrain setup to display mountains in the distance beyond what I had modeled in rhino. The terrain turned off at one point in time (automatically) and now defaults to the off position when I open my file. When I go to turn on the terrain the file immediately crashes. I have reduced the file size in Rhino, tried deleting grasses and other objects, etc etc, still no luck. Does anybody have any ideas as to why this is happening? Thank you very much!

Hi @nickdarin

Apologies for the inconvenience. I would like to know the following:

  • If this issue only persists in this specific file? Have you tried opening another file and activating the Terrain?
  • Which D5 Render Version are you using, please send us a screenshot
  • How did you bring the model to D5 Render? Is it via livesync? Direct import? d5a? And which version of the plug-in are you currently using?
    Rhino

Note : Please update to the latest version of the live-sync plugin and D5 Render if you’re using an old version. Let me know if it helps.

Thanks

Hey there, thanks for reaching out.

  1. The terrain is showing up when I open new/default scenes.
  2. Same version as numbered in your screen shot
  3. Rhino 8 Live Sync. Same version as numbered in your screen shot

I have a lot of vegetation brushed over a large area, I am going to try deleting even more of it out and see if that helps.

Hi @nickdarin

Alright, try to also monitor your VRAM Usage and send us a screenshot while opening the file (with Terrain) at the same time.

The first is with file open before clicking the terrain

The second is after I clicked and the file crashed

Thanks for your help.

Hi @nickdarin

Alright, thanks for sending us these images.

  1. Update your Graphics Card Driver - Based on the screenshot you have provided, it seems that your device is still running an old NVIDIA Graphics Card Driver 561.03. Please update to NVIDIA 572.14 or simply avoid versions from 576.02 onwards since it has a lot of issues. And also ensure that you are using the Game-ready drivers.

  2. Dedicated GPU Memory is at 15.6GB / 16GB - basically, the project is consuming a lot of your dedicated GPU Memory, which may be the cause of this issue. You may want to consider optimizing your file to reduce it or perhaps upgrade it. Although the upgrade may not be viable for now (it depends on your situation) but working with large files with a lot of scatter, you might want to consider this in the future.

General Optimization

  • Perhaps there is a way for you to reduce the scattered assets on this particular file, most especially on parts that are not really evident in specific scenes? If so, I recommend doing it.

  • Does snabiling Smooth Mode instead of precise let you enable the terrain?

  • You may also try to disable Path Tracing and see if there is an improvement.

Thanks for your help. I deleted most of the vegetation assets and was able to delete the terrain and added a new terrain to the scene.

Hi @nickdarin

Alright, thanks for the update.

You might really want to consider updating your Graphics Card, but don’t update it to 576.02 or beyond.
