D5 2.11 my file won't open after loading 5%

Hello D5 team

I started my first project with version 2.11, and honestly, it didn’t go well.

At first, I worked on a scene in sync with SketchUp for two days. Perhaps my mistake was not being used to opening files through the Launcher, since I had been opening them directly through the application. One time, I tried to open it for the first time through the launcher, and it asked me to update. After doing so, the original file and its recovery history disappeared completely. Nothing, anywhere, no trace of the files, and the folder was empty.

Then I started from scratch, always opening from the launcher and saving the file several times with progressive numbers. To avoid problems, I worked with the files from an external drive via USB to the PC. Now, every time I opened the last saved version, some textures disappeared. The texture was there, but it looked white, and it wasn’t corrected until I loaded another texture and reverted to the original. This was done with D5 textures and external ones as well.

So I copied the files to a disk inside the PC, separate from the C drive where the programs were installed. I worked for three days until I completed the project with textures, assets, and lighting, ready to render. I saved the last version. I tried to reopen it in the morning, and it wouldn’t open, and D5 disappeared at 5% of the opening time every time.

The versions from the recovery history also won’t open. I can only open very early versions of the project, but when I try to link them with SKP, they won’t connect; D5 and Sketchup freeze. If I try to connect the SKP file to a new D5 scene, it does, but not to the intermediate ones from the project.

I also tried
_Opening the last completed file on two different computers with two versions of D5 Pro loaded a while ago, with the same result and no sync with SketchUp.
_I can open other test scenes without a problem; I don’t test older projects because I’m afraid they’ll also become corrupted.
_If I start with an empty scene, everything seems to work; something happened to the last files when the process was well advanced.

I suspended delivery to the client, hoping for help and to be able to recover the work. So far, I’ve been working on the same two machines for years, completing many projects without problems. The only change was the update to 2.11.

Best regards and thanks.

Hello. I’ll also email Support the link to the scene files via Web Transfer.
Thanks.

Hi @JoeLouis

I apologize for the inconvenience. We do not recommend working with project files directly from an external USB drive. Minor connection fluctuations can cause textures or assets to disappear, and may even lead to severe file corruption. For best results, please work with files that are saved on your computer’s local hard drive.

Additionally, to help us troubleshoot, could you please clarify which version your file was created in? There is a known issue where some files created in a previous D5 version will not open in 2.11. Reverting to version 2.10.2 is a known workaround for this issue.

We’ve also pinpointed the cause of the issue and a full repair will be available in 2.11 hotfix version.

After reviewing the files of some users who have sent us their files and log files, we’ve found that the crash is being caused by a “long file path” on your system.

Essentially, the entire address of your scene file, including all the folders it’s saved in, is too long for your computer’s settings. When the program tries to load some of the plant textures (which also have long file names), the combined path becomes too long, causing it to crash.

Please try to open your registry and check whether the value is 1 or 0

  • 1 indicates that long path support is enabled. If this value is 1 and the scene still crashes, there may be another underlying cause.
  • If it is 0, have the user change it to 1 and save the settings to see if the scene can now be opened.

I’ll also be checking your file if it opens on our end normally.

Hi Clov, thanks for the fast answer
The file was made in the las version 2.11
with the last update

Now Im in midnigth, tomorrow
I ll try yours workaround,
Have you recive the email in support
whit the link for the file?

Hi @JoeLouis

Yes I can open your file normally on my end.

Hi Clov

When I tried to open the file, I tried uninstalling D5 and reinstalling it again. I was able to uninstall the app, but I couldn’t uninstall Luncher. It always says it’s open and needs to be closed, which I couldn’t.

When I tried to uninstall D5 from Luncher, it first downloaded and then asked to install, but the install button was flashing again without doing so.

I was only able to install it on another disk on the PC. It works now, but I don’t feel like it’s a clean install.

How do I reinstall D5 on a single disk and delete the residual folders?
I need to reinstall it properly first to continue with the file recovery process.

Best regards and thank you.

Hi Clov

If you were able to open the file, and it didn’t show any errors or corruption, can you send me the fixed file via Web Transfer?

Thank you very much.

Hi Clov

Your first shot hit the target.
Excellent! Everything was solved just by changing long file path enable to 1 in the registry.

That way, I was able to open all the files until I found the last, most complete one with all my work intact.
When you can, I’d like to know how to complete a clean install from scratch in D5 2.11.

Thank you very much.

Hi @JoeLouis

Alright, thanks for updating us.

  • A clean reinstall would mean uninstalling D5 Render and its Launcher. You can simply uninstall both of these applications, then install them again.
