I cant for the love of me find out how to add outside asset materials. Does it have to be a jpg, or png. i tried jpgs but for some reason the material wont change.

Both JPG and PNG are supported, and PNG is recommended.
You need to put the map into the corresponding slot to get the correct effect, and here is the reference:

In my opinion, you may need to insert base color map first, to get an obvious change.
