Hi, looking for some tech help with a file that has become corrupted and we’ve tried multiple ways of recovering it. Having read through many similar posts and trying some fixes, thought we’d try and reach out on here for any help.
We are a small business and use Dropbox to store our files and download projects as and when we need them. Today we downloaded a project to make some changes for a client and opened the D5 file and when it opened, we got the prompt to update the assets as this project had been made a few updates ago. It took 15 minutes or so but once the updates had completed, D5 shut down. We tried opening the file again and it would start loading and then get to about 5% and close completely. We tried this on multiple different PC’s.
We tried loading the file from the Revit plug in as the main model was made in that and the files are linked but it wouldn’t open there either. We tried restoring an older version of the file from Dropbox but nothing is working and we now are getting the error message saying the file is corrupted. This is a big issue for us with this project as it was a large complex one that can’t be redone easily so any advice or help is much appreciated!
Thank you for contacting us, and we appreciate the time and effort you have spent trying to resolve this issue and the detailed information you shared with us. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this problem has caused you and your company. To ensure I fully understand your case, I have listed a series of questions below:
Is this the first time you’ve encountered this issue?
Does this happen for one specific file or all of your files?
Can you recall which D5 version was used to create this old project?
Has this file encountered similar issues before, such as lagging, slow rendering, or crashing the D5 software due to its file size? This is important as we undergo several updates, and file size tends to increase after software updates.
Does your D5 software run smoothly on other projects?
Has your Revit plugin encountered the same issue before?
Have you opened a new Revit project and synced it to D5? Does it run perfectly?
Would you mind sharing your full project file of Revit and D5 folder with me for a thorough investigation? You can send it to support@d5techs.com and add the full link to this issue (D5 Forum). Lastly, tag me @maslu, your technical support for easy tracking.
I believe this is the first time we’ve had this kind of issue. Currently its only one specific project and its files we’ve encountered it with.
The project was made with the D% programme, 2 updates ago but when we opened the file it asked us to update the assets which it seemingly completed as it saved the file with yesterdays date before it shut down and now we can’t open it but the restored versions were made 2 updates ago, about month or so?
The file was pretty slow at times because it was a large file but it really depended on which computer we were using at the time as well as they have different specs but we hadn’t had any other issues with the file and it hadn’t crashed D5 before to our knowledge.
D5 is working fine for other projects, only a few very large projects are experiencing lag but that’s to be expected, and the Revit plug in is fine too and syncing perfectly on new projects and older ones.
I’ll send the file on but it is a large file, again thank you so much for the help and for looking into it!
Thank you for providing the additional information. I have opened the file and have not encountered any issues so far. Before I proceed with providing the possible cause and solution, please confirm whether the images below are the most updated versions.
Also, could you please provide your current PC and GPU specs for using this scene? Additionally, could you confirm the static feature reading on your VRAM while working on this project? Monitoring VRAM usage is crucial, as irregularities such as lag, freezing, and corrupted files can occur when VRAM usage goes above 90%.
For huge files like this, we tend to suggest the following:
Optimizing the scene file: delete unseen foliages or landscapes if unused.
To reduce its size, lessen the overall polycounts in the main model file.
Once you can confirm that the images I’ve attached above were saved based on your last update, I will resave this and send it back to you.
