Can I use Community version for paid commission work?

Hello D5 Team,

I have a question about commercial use with the Community license and material library usage.

In 2023, I received official confirmation via email that:

  • “D5 Render community version can be used for commercial purpose as well”
  • “There is no notation or usage fee for commercial use”

However, the pricing page currently states that Community is “for non-commercial purposes” only.

My situation:

  • I want to use D5 Community to render background images for paid manga/comic illustration work (commission work)
  • I will only use the rendered images, not redistribute the software or assets

Questions:

  1. Is the 2023 confirmation still valid in December 2025?
  2. Can I use images rendered with Community version for paid client work?
  3. Regarding the Material Library: Your Terms of Service mentions “Personal Use” and “Project Use” materials, but I cannot find any indication in the software UI showing which materials are which. How can I identify whether a material is “Personal Use” or “Project Use”?

I want to make sure I’m using D5 correctly according to the current terms.

Hi @namenameburuga

Any work that generates income, is for a client, or is for professional promotion needs a paid license. So, no, you generally cannot use the D5 Render Community (Free) version for commercial, revenue-generating work; it’s strictly for learning, personal projects, and non-profit evaluation, with professional use requiring a paid D5 Pro or Teams license to unlock full features and commercial rights.

While it’s a powerful tool, using it commercially without upgrading violates their terms and can lead to license revocation, so ensure you purchase the appropriate license if your work involves generating income. Thank you for your understanding.
