Artifacts in Shadow Contours During Solar Transition Animation

Hello community. I’m experiencing an issue with shadows in a solar lighting animation. My animation is a transition that runs from 12:16 pm to 5:37 pm. As the sun moves through its path, the shadows cast throughout the scene develop small blotches and irregularities along their edges. This is particularly noticeable on the pavement in front of the building façade.

Important note: When I render a single frame as a still image in 2K resolution, the shadows appear perfectly clean. The artifact only occurs during playback of the animated transition.

I’ve attached a screenshot where I’ve highlighted the problem area with a red circle.

Animation Details:

  • Duration: 28 seconds
  • Frame rate: 120 fps (previously tested with 60 fps hoping to resolve the issue)
  • Video resolution: 2K
  • Lighting method: GeoSky (screenshots of current parameters included)

:computer: System Specifications:

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti
  • Dedicated VRAM: 11,027 MB
  • Driver version: 32.0.15.7680 (June 11, 2025)
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X (24 cores @ 3.79 GHz)
  • Installed RAM: 64 GB (63.9 GB usable)
  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit, x64 architecture)

:brain: I’d greatly appreciate any technical advice, similar experiences, or potential solutions. Has anyone successfully addressed this kind of shadow artifact during solar lighting transitions?

Hi @VDArquitectos

I apologize for the inconvenience. This is currently a known issue, although this only appears when Super Resolution is enabled, and then rendering these videos in 2k quality and above. The workaround for now is to disable Super Resolution.

Thank you for the clarification. I’ll proceed by disabling Super Resolution to avoid the shadow artifacts during the solar transition animation. Appreciate the information.

Hi @VDArquitectos

Thanks for the update.
