AI Material Snap is Useless?

I finally tried AI Material Snap. D5 youtube tutorial shows somewhat generic wood material from reference photo, which is pointless since there are already generic wood materials in D5.

This feature would be good if it can make tile materials since it can be time consuming to make seamless tile map from reference image. I tried this random screen capture, showing the tiles from straight on. The result is useless after waiting a little for it to process.

Is there something I’m missing to make it better? Is there a way to upload an additional photo that only has tile grid line so that AI knows it’s a certain shaped tile? (I guess the grid lines will have to be Photoshopped to create, and at that point you might as well make the texture seamless in Photoshop).

What is this AI Material Snap for if it’s only good for generic materials that are already included in D5 materials? Just to use as marketing? A lot of comments on Youtube video seem quite impressed, but it’s anywhere near it. Maybe it’s a progress, and in a few years it could be actually useful. However, at current state, it’s more than baffling that they are advertising on this.

Hi @bcsadmin

Thank you for sharing such detailed and candid feedback. You are not missing any hidden steps or settings. I’ve tested AI Material Snap on my end as well, and I can confirm your findings.

The feature is functional but currently limited. At this stage, it is most useful for quickly generating generic, organic materials such as wood, concrete, fabric, or stone, rather than precise, repeatable architectural textures like tiles. AI Material Snap is not yet reliable for structured, pattern-based materials (such as tiles or grids), as it interprets only a single reference image and does not yet understand strict geometric repetition.
