Shadow (sun) bug

I am creating an exterior render, and with hdri, the shadows work with the sun.
And when I set the sun to Geo & Sky, it still looks good (without errors) in the preview (high quality) window. The only thing happening is the shadow is popping in and out from the hedges on the right, while moving the camera.

Even during rendering, the shadow still looks good, but as soon as I open the final result, it gets ‘cut off’ in a weird way.

Left = preview / right = final render (both with Geo and Sky)

Hedge is created with line-tool

Hi there, would you please send us a screenshot of which kind of hedge is used here? And line tool refers to the Path tool, right? We recommend rendering an image to see whether the problem is there. If the shadow in image rendering is correct, please turn off LOD and render animation again. Then the problem should be solved.

  • Golden pivet 08 has indeed been used with the vegetation path tool, sorry for calling it line tool.

  • As mentioned in the first post, the right side IS a rendered image. So the shadow in an image rendering is not correct.
  • To clarify: It is correct in a hdri with sun rendered image, it is correct in rendered video (also with sun/sky) and it is correct in the HQ preview. The problem occurs only in the rendered image of Sun/Sky

Hi, would you please send the scene file with cameras to support@d5techs.com? We’ll check why this happens. Please tell us the rendered image resolution in the email as well. Thanks for your patience and support!

Hi! We checked the scene file you sent. We guess that the issue you mentioned is caused by the cloud shadow. When we tried switching off and then on Cloud as well as the “Cast Shadow” option, the reflection is normal. Please try this way we did, then check if the issue persists.

I noticed it has something to do with resolution rendering.

When rendered on 1892x1352 (window size): The shadow is correct.
When rendered on 2k: Shadow is correct.
When rendered on 4k: Incorrect/cut off shadow
When rendered on any other size than window (even if I keep the same ratio AS window size): it gets cut off.

Depending the different resolutions, it also gets cut off at different areas of the hedge-shadow.

I have tested 4k rendering also with ‘cast shadows’ on, at the cloud tab. Both ‘on’ and ‘off’ results in cut-off shadows.
Turning off clouds (window size upped to 2799x2000 for instance): still cut-off shadow.

Edit:
So I am continuing to find out when it occurs. If I keep the aspect ratio bound to the screen size,
results are fine on the previous mentioned 1892x1352, same goes for 2100x1501 but at 2250x1608 the problem occurs and the shadows get cut off again.

Any clue?

I need to confirm with you about this point. In D5 Render, when clicking Render on the top right corner, you cannot choose both the size and the ratio together. So how do you choose another size when keeping the same ratio please?

Besides, we do not reproduce the issue you confronted. Could you please send me your scene file again? Maybe something gets wrong with your scene file somehow last time. And please remember to set the camera when you see the shadow is cut off as a new scene, so that we do not need to find the same camera angle as the one in the screenshot you sent before.

But you can choose another size and keep the ratio. Let me introduce you to a nice D5 feature.

If you click a aspect ratio, for instance window, and then adjust the size at CUSTOM, it wil keep the same ratio as you adjust the width or height, as long as the chain icon stays active. You’re welcome. :sunglasses:

The file I have sent via the mail has an link, it is still active, so you can re-download it. Please note, it is scene 1. Because scene 2 is the same but then with HDRI.

Render it on aspect ratio set to ‘WINDOW’, which right now is 2985x1352 and it’s fine.
Render it again but now on 4000x1812 and the shadow goes bust in the final render.

Thanks for telling me about the size and the ratio
According to what you said, we have reproduced this issue. Yes, in 4k, this issue will happen.

We will further look into this issue. If there are any updates, I will keep you updated here.

I wonder if you have found out what causes this error.

Sorry for keeping you waiting. We are still looking into this issue. We found that when forming the photo during rendering, part of the shadow gets cut off which is outside the shot. And this issue only happens to vegetation planted by the path tool. We will fix this issue.
As a workaround, you are recommended to plant the vegetation, whose shadow is cut off, by putting the vegetation model manually without using the path tool.
