Revit-D5 Workflow Problem with Links and Lights

Hi, fairly new to D5 and trying out the workflow, so please bear with me.

I’m using it for a simple project with 2 Revit Links: 1 file for the SITE (the host file, which is geo-accurate and has true-north), and another file for the BUILDING (which is not geo-accurate). They do not share base/survey points, but they share coordinates using the internal shared coordinates.

My workflow is as follows: the BUILDING file is clean, oriented orthagonally along vertical and horizontal axes, and includes all the documentation necessary. I then link this BUILDING file into the SITE file (host), including all the relevant information like lights, materials, etc. This is basic in Revit.

My problem is that when I sync the SITE file into D5, it does includes the linked BUILDING file, but when I use “Sync Lights”, D5 doesn’t seem to import the lights inside the linked BUILDING file. All the lights within the SITE file is imported properly, but not the lights from the linked file.

Is there any workaround for this? I want to avoid importing them separately into D5 as I would need to reposition the BUILDING again within D5, which is considered destructive modelling, seems imprecise, and will have separate problems with re-syncing.

Thank you in advance.

Hello @bdrgs

just for confirmation, do you mean the BUILDING file is an external file linked to the SITE file (host model file)?

I suppose it’s not supported yet. Can you try to merge the Revit linked files into the host model and sync again to check the result? Just in case, please remember to backup.

Hi Leah,

Yes you are correct: the BUILDING file is an external (Revit) file linked to the SITE file (host model file).

Merging, or binding, is considered a mortal sin in Revit for most applications, so I would prefer not to go that route (cos I still need to do architect stuff), and I would prefer to have a live link between the render engine and the Revit work file, makes our lives easier for adjustments.

Having said that, I’ve already tried binding the linked file, and not surprisingly it works. Hope this is in the pipeline for support!

Hi @bdrgs,

Thanks for your updates.

D5 currently only supports syncing linked models, lights of linked models are not supported, and there are no related immediate dev plans. Thanks for your understanding

I will convey your requirement to the team. You’re also welcome to put your needs/suggestions in ‘Ideas & Requests’ part, which will be more helpful for our team to track.
