Proposal: “Geometry Link” Plugin for AutoCAD → D5 Render
Objective
Enable AutoCAD users to directly link 3D geometry into D5 Render, with automatic DWG updates, without handling materials, lights, or cameras.
Why this matters
- AutoCAD is still the global standard for technical drawings, retail layouts, interior design, and architectural production.
- AutoCAD is also a true 3D modeler, capable of solids, surfaces, meshes, and parametric objects.
- Many DWG files are produced not only in AutoCAD but also in DWG‑based platforms such as ProgeCAD, BricsCAD, ZWCAD, etc.
- A geometry‑only link would instantly make D5 accessible to millions of DWG users who currently have no direct workflow.
Requested features (geometry only)
- Import of 3D solids, surfaces, and meshes from DWG.
- Preservation of layers, blocks, and instances.
- Automatic scene update in D5 when the DWG changes.
- No material, light, or camera translation (handled directly inside D5).
Why a File Link Manager is essential
A system similar to 3ds Max File Link Manager would allow:
- Live DWG updates
- Support for DWG files created in AutoCAD, ProgeCAD, BricsCAD, ZWCAD, etc.
- A unified, stable pipeline for all DWG‑based CAD applications
- A simple, lightweight integration without requiring 3ds Max
Immediate benefits
- Faster workflow for retail stores, jewelry shops, optical shops, and technical interiors.
- Eliminates intermediate steps (FBX, OBJ, 3ds Max).
- Opens D5 to a massive DWG ecosystem.
- Provides a simple, efficient, and highly requested feature.
Market impact
A “Geometry Link” plugin would be easy to develop, highly stable, and would solve a real, widespread need. It would bring D5 into the DWG world — a market currently completely untouched.
