Object list organized with folders

Folders with drag and drop capability rather than groups similar to Twinmotion. Also if you do keep groups you need to be able to filter the list to groups only

Hi @jphelps,
Thanks for sharing the idea. Could you tell us a bit more about why folders would work better for you than the current groups? We’d love to understand your workflow and what problems folders would help solve.

First off, is my understanding correct that to add something to an already existing group you first have to ungroup the group and then regroup the group with the new thing you are adding? If so, that right there is a problem. Very cumbersome process. I like setting up my folder structure in advance and then populate the folders as I go. I like the folder order to stay fixed throughout the process of working. That way I know where everything is at all times. Also then, having the abiltiy to have folders inside of folders allows a finer level of organization. The capability to just be able to drag and drop items from one folder to another or to just delete anything from a folder. Just like file explorer in Windows really. I’m already so familiar with that it could really speed up my process in D5. Twinmotion is set up this way last time I worked in it. With the groups, one thing that would help is if you could filter by groups so just your groups show. I don’t think I saw a way to do that. Hey, thanks for asking. Feel free to ask for clarification or more questions.

correct that ungroup and re-group thing is sad that it is needed atm in d5.
a folder structure or have the option to add more things to an group would be nice

hi @jphelps @3d-ontwerp-visualisa thanks a lot for sharing!
I do have one question, right now it should be possible to just select object and drag it into an existing group without ungrouping.
I’d love to hear more about why you’re using the ungroup/regroup method, does the current drag-and-drop not work well for you?
Really appreciate your thoughts!

Just two days ago I was working on a project where I created a group for certain elements. Later I realized that the multiple groups needed to be rotated. However, rotating the whole element around one point was not possible when multiple groups were selected.

That’s why I wanted to merge those groups into one larger groups, so I could rotate them around one axis. Unfortunately, this wasn’t possible. When selecting the objects in the objectlist and right-clicking, the only option available was ā€˜ungroup’
there was no option to Group. (for all those multiple groups)

It was also not possible to merge one group into another by dragging it in the object list.

Because of this, I had to ungroup everything first, then regroup all the objects together, just so I could rotate everything around a single axis.

Ok, I went back and looked at it again and I see you can drag things in and out of groups and I also see you can create a group within a group. I guess that is the functionality I am looking for. It’s just groups instead of folders. For me it’s just a matter of trying to stay organized when you have thousands of items in a scene. Groups allow me to select certain items all at once quickly to show or hide for example. One other thing I will mention… Lumion has a layer system and it is really inadequate. They only give you 32 layers and there is no way to visualize at a glance what is in which layer. One thing I do like about it though is you can make sure items you place in the scene or models you import into the scene are on a certain layer by having that layer the active layer when you place or import the item. It saves a step of having to move the items to a layer after they’ve been placed. Thanks again for asking. Sorry I didn’t get the full functionality of the groups. I’m still pretty new to D5.
